The Department of Theatre presents a short, devised, ensemble-based theatre investigation into the linguistic DNA of UNC Charlotte and the vibrant communities that feed, root, and sprout from this campus.

When you listen to UNC Charlotte and its community, what languages do you hear? Roots and Words invites the campus and local community to listen beyond everyday talk and wonder about the stories living under and around our words. Grown  from the ground up by a collaborative student ensemble, and utilizing elements of physical theatre, verbatim theatre, and community storytelling, this dynamic new piece challenges audiences to examine how language defines, divides, and unites us.

Created collaboratively by the Spring 2026 Devised Theatre class and the Roots and Words student cast, led/directed by Beth Murray and CarlosAlexis Cruz.
