Intro to Learning Objectives and Backward Design

Intro to Learning Objectives and Backward Design

Monday, February 19, 2024 - Friday, February 23, 2024

This asynchronous, online workshop clarifies the use of learning objectives for teaching and provides concrete steps for planning and writing course and module objectives for your course that match what you need and want to teach.  This is a one-week, fully online, asynchronous course in Canvas facilitated by CTL Instructional Designers. The workshop consists of readings, illustrations, and self-checks. The self-checks are a mix of multiple choice, matching, and essay questions to help you verify your knowledge of objectives and also provide the opportunity for feedback from the workshop facilitators. The final deliverable of the workshop is a course map for one module of your course, listing out module objectives, materials, activities, and assessments.  You should plan to work consistently throughout the workshop to complete the readings, self-checks, and final assessment. The workshop will take around 3 hours to complete. To be marked as complete for this workshop, you will need to complete all four self-checks and submit the final assessment (list of course objectives with an outline of one module of one of your courses including module objectives, activities, materials, and assessments).    Workshop Objectives:   1. Define learning objectives, both at the course level and the module level.  2. Apply characteristics of good objectives to the revision and creation of course and module objectives.  3. Apply the concept of alignment to the revision and creation of activities, materials, and assessments. This workshop counts towards the Essentials of Teaching and Learning Certificate.
