Abstract:

This project is part of a larger multicenter study involving multiple facilities within Atrium Health located in Charlotte, North Carolina to highlight the similarities and differences in the perceptions and use of the handoff tool at facilities with differing patient load and patient acuity. The facilities surveyed consists of a large level one trauma center, a suburban hospital with mid-level services, and a few rural hospitals. This individual project will be surveying the rural hospitals. CRNAs at three small rural facilities that do not use a standardized handoff tool will be surveyed to identify their reasons for not using one and improvements that can be made in the tool to encourage its use. Some specific reasons a tool may not be used at a small hospital include the providers’ belief in their ability to give all pertinent information without the use of a tool and their close proximity to PACU.
