This event is part of CHESS AI Week: Exploring Artificial Intelligence Across the Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences

Featuring Alexia Galati, Ph.D. and Anita Sarkar, MTech, MBARegister

As large language models like ChatGPT rapidly enter classrooms and study spaces, their role in reading, writing, and learning is evolving — and is contested. In this talk, Alexia Galati, Ph.D. and Anita Sarkar, MTech, MBA, will explore how AI is reshaping students’ engagement with texts, argumentation, and comprehension. By synthesizing emerging research and cognitive theories, they will consider the trade-offs and instructional implications of integrating AI tools in educational contexts and invite discussion about how educators might shape these technologies to align with human learning goals.

The presenters draw on recent studies, highlighting how AI-assisted writing can promote more integrative essays while reducing reading effort and comprehension. They will also examine ChatGPT’s capabilities and limits in source evaluation, its potential to support writing assessment, and how students conceptualize the tool itself.

7 to 8 p.m., College of Health & Human Services, Room 155
